Legends Sweep Doubleheader Against Heat

nearhoof hitThe Long Beach Legends (28-19, 9-5) held on for a 1-0 victory against the High Desert Heat (10-16, 3-14) Saturday afternoon in game one of a doubleheader at Joe Hicks Memorial Field.

The game was played at a rapid pace and finished in about one hour and fifty minutes as a pitcher’s duel emerged between Max Bethell and Greg Turner.

Bethell struck out four in seven innings of work and earned the win.

Turner tossed a complete game, only surrendering one run, but suffered the tough loss.

The Legends struck for their only run in the bottom of the third inning when yesterday’s hero, Steven Garber, added another game-winning RBI scoring Eric Lewis. Lewis singled and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Danny Haley in the inning. Lewis finished 3-for-4.

Everything seemed to be going smoothly for Long Beach until the top of the ninth. Alex Pollard and Aaron Cisneros belted line-drive base hits up the middle and Thomas McCarty drew a walk to load the bases with no outs.

Cody Yates, who entered in the eighth, worked his way out of the jam with the help of his battery mate Sean Nearhoof.

After getting Steven Beltran to fly out to first, Nearhoof gunned out McCarty on an amazing snap-throw to first to record the second out, and Yates took matters into his own hands from there striking out Leonard Malfavon to end the game.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Legends (29-19, 10-5) defeated the Heat (10-16, 3-14) by another one-run margin, this time 5-4 was the final.
