Legends Suffer Another Heartbreaking Setback

guzman swingThe Long Beach Legends (21-12, 7-3) lost to the Glendale Angelenos 8-7 Saturday night at Glendale Community College.

The Legends had plenty of opportunities, but failed to cash in, leaving 12 men on base throughout the game.

The Legends took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Jeff Guzman scored, but the Angelenos answered immediately with a two-run third, a four-run fourth and a one-run sixth to grab a 7-2 lead.

The Angelenos were led by Sako Chapjian, who blasted two home runs and four RBI.

The Legends fought until the bitter end. They got one run back in the fifth when Guzman scored for the second time of the night.

In the seventh, Long Beach strung together three consecutive hits. Vince Lawrence singled and scored on Danny Haley’s RBI double. Steven Garber followed in suit with another RBI double to make it 7-5.

The Legends tacked on one more run in the eighth to cut the five-run deficit to one. The bases were loaded with two outs, but Sam Frakes got out of the jam for the Angelenos.

Glendale added an all-important insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to make it 8-6 because Matt Chavez scored in the ninth on a wild pitch to once again bring the Legends within a run. For the second consecutive inning, Frakes worked his way out of a bases loaded jam as Lawrence ripped a line-drive directly at shortstop Ruben Padilla, who flipped it to second base for the force out.

The Legends have a couple days off before hosting the Ventura Pirates on Tuesday.
