flores warmup swingThe Long Beach Legends (21-11, 7-3) split a doubleheader with the Palm Springs Power (20-2, 9-2) winning the first 4-3, while falling 4-0 in the second game Thursday afternoon at Long Beach City College.

In game one, the Legends jumped out early to a 4-0 lead against the Power and held on to a 4-3 victory.

Matt Chavez worked a lengthy at-bat, finally crushing a line-drive double down the right field line. Ray Patchen belted him in with an RBI knock. Aaron Gray followed in suit with another RBI base hit to give the Legends a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

The Legends doubled their lead in the third when Aaron Gray ripped a two-run single scoring Chavez and Vince Lawrence.

The Power clawed back into the game with one in the fourth and two in the fifth, but that was as close as Palm Springs would get. Mark Lindsay hit in Austin Barrett in the fourth, while Ryan Raslowsky and Brett Sullivan scored in the fifth.

Danny Ittner tossed six quality innings with four strikeouts and just five hits allowed. He picked up the win, while Cesar Chavez recorded the dominant three-inning save with no hits allowed.

In game two, a pitcher’s duel broke out as no one scored for the first six innings.

Jeff Curran struck out seven and allowed one run on two hits in seven innings for the Legends.

The Power countered with Mitch Bluman, who hurled 7.1 innings giving up no runs. Pete Reyes shut the door with the save.

Palm Springs took the lead in the seventh inning when Anthony Torres purposely got caught in a rundown allowing T.J. Bennett the opportunity to steal home.

Raslowsky tacked on one more run in the eighth to extend the lead to 2-0.

Michael Massi doubled the score with a two-run single in the ninth.

The Power host the Casa Grande Cotton Kings on Friday, while the Legends travel to Glendale to play the Angelenos on Saturday night. The Legends vs the Angelenos will be broadcast live on sccbaseball.com at 7 p.m.
