After Strong Start, Legends Fall

patchen battingThe Long Beach Legends (3-2) fell to the House of Hardball Hitmen 8-6 Saturday afternoon at Long Beach City College.

It looked like a pitcher’s duel was in the making as the Legends’ starter Danny Ittner frustrated the Hitmen in six brilliant innings of work. He only allowed two hits and one unearned run.

Long Beach jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Jeff Guzman belted an RBI single. The Hitmen answered with one run in the third.

Dylan Nault broke the tie in the fourth with an RBI groundout and Guzman ripped his second RBI of the game to extend the lead to 3-1, but a six-run seventh inning erased the lead.

The Hitmen scored seven unanswered runs to snatch an 8-3 advantage heading to the bottom of the eighth, but the Legends fought until the bitter end.

J Rhett Montana scored Aaron Gray with a line drive up the middle to make it 8-4.

In the ninth, Matt Chavez crushed a triple to right field scoring the speedy Hugo Rodriguez, who swiped three bags in the game. Gray knocked in Chavez with an RBI single and the Legends sent the tying run to the plate, but it wasn’t meant to be.

The Legends next game is against the L.A. Brewers Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.
