Sabers Defeat Thrashers 12-5

The Diamond Valley Sabers (8-6, 6-3) defeated the Los Angeles Thrashers (4-4, 1-3) 12-5 Friday afternoon at Pierce College.

The Sabers offense exploded immediately in the top of the first inning when they hit through the lineup and scored four runs.

Jake Pilkerton led things off with a single and scored. The newest member of the Sabers, Kody Davis walked and scored. Tyler Payne belted a two-run double and scored. Wes Cottier smashed an RBI single and the Sabers were up 4-0 before people could even settle into their seats.

The Thrashers answered with one run in the third when Jack Heidelman knocked in his UCSD teammate Jonah Northrop. Heidelman finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, while Northrop went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run.

The Sabers immediately responded in the fourth when Pilkerton belted an RBI base hit scoring Joseph Szczepanski to extend the lead to 5-1.

They widened the gap even further in the fifth when the team batted around through the lineup for the second time in the game. This time, Payne, Billy Logan, Cottier and Eric Craft scored. Craft and Brett Torrance each had two-run doubles in the inning. The Sabers led 9-1 heading to the sixth.

In the sixth, it seemed like the momentum was finally shifting toward the Thrasher dugout. The hitters showed discipline at the plate, drawing four walks in the inning. Heidelman, Kevin Rowley, Stephon Brown and J.C. Rasic all scored to cut the eight run deficit in half to 9-5. Reed had two RBIs, while Rasic and Northrop added one apiece.

Cleanup hitter Heidelman came up for the second time of the inning, this time with bases loaded. After facing a 9-1 deficit, the tying run stood at the plate, but it wasn’t meant to be. Heidelman was retired.

The Sabers went right back to work scoring two more runs in the seventh and one in the ninth to put the game out of reach. Torrance scored two of the runs and Szczepanski scored the other. Davis, Szczepanski and Kayden Glass recorded RBIs to make it 12-5.

The Thrashers next game is a doubleheader at the High Desert Heat on Saturday. The Sabers next game is a non-conference matchup against Express on Saturday.
